Every town across Catalunya celebrates their patron saint's day with a festa major. Barcelona's patron saint is Mare de Deu de la Mercè. Although the official saint's day is 24 September, Barcelona celebrates their festa major for four or five days filled with free museums, concerts, performances, fireworks and traditional Catalan activities - such as castellers and correfocs. There are many events tailored to keep children and teens entertained as well. Visiting Barcelona during La Mercè would be a fantastic way to experience the culture of Barcelona and Catalunya. Plus all the free activities make it great on the pocketbook.
